Hello world!
My name is Jennifer Ferguson, but I answer to Jen (or most anything else, within reason).
That would be me on the left.
I'm a student in the MSLIS program at Syracuse University, graduating in 2008.
I will complete the Certificate of Advanced Study in Digital Libraries (aka the CAS-DL) at the same time.
About me
I grew up in Michigan, but I've lived in metrowest Boston for over ten years and consider it home.
My background is in biology and chemistry. I received an M.S. in biology from Boston College. I'm currently doing research at Wellesley College in the Hood-DeGrenier lab, working on various projects involving protein localization in the yeast cell cycle.
I have one husband, one 4 year old son, and one lazy old cat. In my spare time (ha) I enjoy things like ice skating, gardening, walking and reading. I also volunteer as a distributed proofreader for Project Gutenberg.
Nice to meet you, Jen. So, what's the plan after school?
I haven't decided exactly what I'd like to do after I graduate. I am interested in a lot of things in the information science world, which is a big reason why I entered it in the first place.
Some of my interests include science libraries and digital libraries - particularly preservation issues.
I find the use of wikis as scientific collaboration tools (such as OpenWetWare) a promising development in information-sharing in scientific research.
I am also passionately interested in Open Access initiatives in scholarly publishing worldwide.
Why library and information science?
You can read my 'manifesto', if you really want to know!
